Natural Balance knows that having the right team is the key to the success of any project. Our team of trades people, management, and industry professionals is dedicated to bringing our clients the highest quality of construction available.
Each member of our team has been handpicked by Nick for outstanding craftsmanship, work ethic, shared values and exceptional client focus. Through ongoing training, team members continuously upgrade their skills and expertise to remain at the leading edge of the construction industry.
Building a home can be one of the most stressful projects anyone can take on. But Nick Kerchum is proving that where there’s a natural balance of passion, skills and experience, building an extraordinary home can actually be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.
At Natural Balance, Nick is a visionary - someone who sees a new and better way to build modern, architectural homes and greener, healthier communities. Nick helps clients articulate the vision they have for their home, and then works with architects and his team to convert that vision into a solid building plan. Nick has done extensive project management training through Priority Management, LEED training through the Canadian Green Building Council, holds a Business Degree from BCIT and a Bachelors Degree in International Relations from UBC.
Nick is passionate about changing the way contractors work with homeowners, architects and city planners. With his team, they are leading a new generation of home builders who are challenging old conventions in the building industry - by putting a premium on delivering innovative service to customers, adhering to the highest construction standards in the business.
Most of all, Nick believes passionately in working with homeowners to create a more sustainable community – one that reflects our shared values. That’s the Natural Balance difference!
Born in Vancouver and a former Grey Ghost, Alexis spent most of his time in Whistler pursuing an amateur career in Alpine Ski Racing. After moving to Whistler in 1995, Alexis found carpentry as a way to help fund his dream of making the Canadian national ski team, but also found the unexpected inspiration from experienced builders and carpenters to fuel a passion in carpentry.
After moving back to Vancouver in 2001, Alexis completed an undergraduate degree in Geography at UBC, but realized his passion lay in building custom homes and analyzing plans, rather than maps.
As a Red Seal certified carpenter, Alexis has experience as foreman and manager in both new construction and renovations. Working and collaborating with clients, architects, and consultants to execute challenging projects motivates Alexis to always be learning and continually pursuing better ways to build beautiful things that last.
When Alexis isn't working he and his wife Joanna can be found attending various tea parties and celebrations hosted by their three year old daughter or lapping the princess dress aisle at Winners if it's super rainy.
Joe has been in the construction industry since 2001, and is a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter. In 2006 Joe began managing construction, and that's where he really found his calling. By 2010 Joe began exclusively working on contemporary, high end residential construction. The challenge of this modern architecture keeps Joe engaged and passionate for the work. Joe constantly strives to create a harmonious collaboration and enjoyable experience throughout his projects. Fostering an environment of growth, Joe believes in the importance of a team atmosphere.
With the mentality of having a healthy balance, Joe also likes to use the same approach in his social life. He's a passionate skateboarder, and plays several team sports. A scuba diver, sailor and overall lover of the ocean. But time spent with family, friends and his dog Nollie are what's most important to Joe.
While going to University in the 80’s Todd developed his zest for building, working as a carpenter he understood his calling to create by hand what others had only drawn.
Forward to Vancouver, after 30 years of primarily custom home building, Todd has by design found his home at Natural Balance.
Todd’s evolved desire for Modern Architecture and the inherent challenges to construct, has him fully captivated. The embracement required of the collaborative building team, the understanding and creative knowledge of structures, assemblies, codes, and the unmistakable value of budget control, are necessary at this level to create successful projects.
Extensive experience and ongoing education has allowed for greater achievements with the Natural Balance team, affiliated consultants and a close family of amazing clients. Todd embraces mentoring and is a Red Seal Carpenter with Project Management diploma from BCIT. Todd can be found off duty with his son working and riding on anything motorized.
Lorna Tam joined the management team at Natural Balance in 2010, and had set the pace for the entire team ever since. Lorna holds a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from SFU, and went on to complete the Certified General Accountant (CGA) program. She loves being challenged, and figuring out how to solve problems and make the business work more efficiently - qualities that come in handy when working in the company of (mostly) men at a busy home building company. Before she joined Natural Balance, Lorna was a senior accountant at an accounting firm, and an account manager at RBC.
Lorna loves travel and cooking (…and eating…and blogging about food), and is also a passionate amateur photographer. She keeps active with Bikram yoga, cycling, and rollerblading. Proving that she’s easily the smartest person working at Natural Balance, Lorna is fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese, and teaches part time at Capilano University on accounting software and systems.
Mike Dykstra is in his element when he’s framing – something he’s been doing on a broad range of home building projects since 1985. Mike has long been considered one of Vancouver’s top framers, with a reputation in the industry that’s second to none. Mike has formed and framed hundreds of homes throughout the Lower Mainland and Gulf Islands, and his resume includes some of the most complex and technically challenging architectural projects ever built in BC.
Mike coined the term “framing meditation” and unsurprisingly, has a relaxed and calm disposition that occasionally rubs off on the rest of us. The father of six beautiful children, Mike donates a week of his time each year to fly to Mexico to build homes for the disadvantaged.
David Hau is currently living the dream as a project manager, helping wonderful people build beautiful homes.
Since graduating from the UBC School of Architecture, David has had the privilege of working exclusively in the construction of premium architecture, from unique condo renovations to contemporary residential to state-of-the-art tech offices. He has collaborated with architects and designers such as Evoke International, Shape Architecture, Leckie Studio, and Blue Sky Architecture.
The multifaceted nature of construction project management is what fuels David’s obsession with his work. These facets include productive communication with architects/clients/trades, the meticulous management of time and money, and the requisite knowledge of the components and codes of buildings. Combine this with his passion for sustainability, he has teamed well with Natural Balance.
In his free time, David enjoys pretending to be an excavator with his son, moving vast quantities of aggregates all over the world.
